Collection: Racecourse Colliery, Hanley

This colorized image captures miners at the Boothen Colliery, established circa 1860 near Rushton Grange, close to Cobridge. The colliery was developed for coal and ironstone extraction, vital for Robert Heath's Ironworks in Biddulph. Despite advancements including steel headgears and the installation of the 'King Edward Pump' for drainage, the site faced challenges like flooding and a drop in resources, leading to its closure in May 1941.
